I had the opportunity to volunteer near the ASU campus at a coffee night established to welcome all members of
the community. The individuals in attendance were mainly individuals that were homeless and survive in the Tempe
area.
I saw so many individuals whom I started out feeling sorry for because of their situations.
I had many conversations with those who took advantage of the coffee that was offered. I soon learned that it was not
necessarily the individuals that were at fault. The society they live in is what is at fault. I saw individuals that had disabilities,
health concerns and emotional challenges they faced daily. Seeking services was indeed difficult for the individuals.
This only reinforced my perception that society needs to change and the people living in this society need to take
responsibility for themselves and for those who cannot effectively help themselves.
I have chosen to help both children and adults develop skills so that they are able to maneuver through society
as productively and effectively as possible. I hope you too take a moment each day to find a way to reach out and help teach
someone a new skill, no matter how small.
